A disturbing trend to say the least... [Nov. 1st, 2007|08:03 am]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
What does the word "slurping" mean to you?  When you hear the word "slurping," what image or images does it invoke?

Maybe it's just my dirty mind but when I hear the word "slurping,"  I can not help but envision someone (usually a woman, but sometimes, mmmmmm....) on his/her knees in front of an erect penis (either real or fake, it doesn't matter), head bobbing up and down, and so much excess saliva that one can all but hear a loud "slurp" accompanying the aforementioned bobbing.  On rare occasion, I might think of someone loudly drinking from a 64-oz Big Gulp through a straw (i.e. slurpin' down Dew/Coke/Pepsi) but even then, there's some sort of subconscious reference to lascivious activity.

Why am I even using brain cells to analyze this?

Well, dear friends, that is due to what has become the gratuitous use of the term in reference to sports reporters and their apparent love of certain male athletes.  The respect of Brett Favre among sports reporters is well-known.  The respect for Peyton Manning is well-known, as is that for Tom Brady.  Nowadays, when reporters effusively praise the aforementioned athletes, their fellow colleagues will say "All right, stop slurping Peyton Manning and the Colts" or "Yes, we all know how you love slurping Tom Brady."

Excuse me?  Did I hear you correctly?

There is something just oddly wrong (and kinda gay) about that.  Now, you all know that I am not homophobic and. honestly, it would be quite hypocritical for me to be (it'd be like hating a part of myself).  However, you also know how homophobic/homo-insensitive the general population can be, particularly male athletes and those who make their livelihoods in the sports industry.   To use a term that references a sexual act that can be homosexual, and to use that term in reference to a male reporter's personal bias towards a particular male athlete, in a world were homosexuality is all but intolerable, just seems...I really wish I could put my finger on why it just seems...wrong.  I mean, I'm not offeneded per se...but how do you explain that to kids?

"Hey Mom...I heard Michael Wilbon say that Tony Kornheiser was slurping Bretty Favre?  What does that mean?"

Even I in my "I-plan-to-be-open-and-honest-about-sexuality" frame of mind am having a hard time trying to figure out how to answer THAT question.

So, how exactly to you justify using such a term?  What would be your explanation to your eight-year old child (because, bear in mind, this was at 5:45 in the evening...not 11:30 at night)?  How does the term "slurping" make you feel, especially in the context in which it has been used among sports reporters?

you can't

It is a very disgusting choice for a compliment. I think homo refrence is becoming mainstream and kind of chic. Like drag queens did, like porn did. Now homosexuality in general. Not that it's on it's way to being accepted, just consumed by pop culture refrence.

They weren't using it as a compliment. Where did you get that from?

When I heard Kornheiser and Wilbon tossing this term back and forth yesterday on PTI, I really couldn't believe my ears. I kept saying to myself, "are they REALLY making a veiled reference to this on TV at 4:30 in the afternoon"?!??!?!? To confirm my fears, they each said it 3 or 4 more times.

I'm going to hope that just like bad weather, if I go inside and ignore this for a little while, the trend goes away.

GOOD. I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt all types of squeamish about that.

And then every time they said it, I was like, "Ummmm...eeeewwww..."

slurping to me says exactly what you thought, and I'm sure that's exactly what they meant. but if i were explaining it to an 8 year old, I'd say that they meant drooling over.

I think soup..cause when soup is hot you kinda slurp it to let in air so you don't burn your tongue...then I think of certain people doing what you said to me...and then I need to remember this is not a locked post so i will shut up now.

It's a sexual reference to me and I never heard anyone used it differently.

Slurpee on the other hand is something you get at the 7-11 around the corner.

I think it's perfect, the obssesion that some of these guys have for these athletes is sickening.

There's a fine line b/w loving a player and riding his dick. As I told folks about Jordan, his dick isn't big enough for YOU AND Juanita to ride.....

Oh, I'm not saying that it isn't a PERFECT description. Not saying that at all.

I'm just wondering if they realize the images that they conjure every time they accuse another reporter of "slurping" his favorite athlete...particularly on national daytime television...

You know I never thought of it in that gay connotation before. I thought of "slurping" like overly "drinking that man's Kool-Aide" or something to that effect.

You know I never thought of it that way before.

Honestly, I can't say I am surprised because I always felt that mainstream sports was full of homophobia and sexual innuendo.
